A Study on Weaning

Abstract
Inorder to clarify the problem of weaning, the mothers of 860 infants (481 male, 379 female) between 6 and 24 months of age from a middle class urban area were questioned regarding their infant weaning practices.
A physical growth and changes of both hematologic and biochemical constituents of blood were also investigated in cases of prolonged breast-feeding.
Furthermore, correlation between the method of feeding, their initial body weight and obese infants were investigated retrospectively.
The results obtained were as follows:
1. The largest age distribution of mother was at the age group between 25 and 29 years (55.1%).
2. More than half of all mother used breast milk in feeding, 20.1% was bottle-fed, and 26.3% given mixed feeding. There were tendency for young mother¢¥s group likely to use artificial feeding (73.4%).
3. Breast-fed infants in their weaning period were weaned later than those fed otherwise.
4. The use of thin rice water as the first food offered were 45.4% and 14.0% were given egg first.
5. Instead 88.5% of total mother had clear idea about weaning, only 65.0% carried out planned weaning practice.
6. Predominating resons for prolonged breast-feeding were sufficient milk flow (50.5%), and baby¢¥s dirrhea(36.9%).
7. Infants with prolonged breast-feeding were slightly underdeveloped as compared with those who finished weaning completely through 8 to 18 months after birth. However, both hematologically and biochemically, no distinct difference in the level of hemoglobin and serum total protein as well as albumin was observed between the infants with long-continued breast-feeding and those who weaned completely.
8. There were some.evidence of relationship between obese infants and artificial-feeding and high initial body weight up to 8 months, but number of obese infants became increased among breast fed thereafter. Kaup index in obese infants showed sharp decline after 10 months of age.
